Unable to afford a typewriter, she took her napping toddler to cafes, where she worked on \u201cHarry Potter and the Sorcerer\u2019s Stone\u201d in longhand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWriting novels is something you have to believe in to keep going,\u201d Rowling said in 2000. \u201cIt\u2019s a fairly thankless job when no one is paying you to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She advises young authors to be ready for disappointment. \u201cYou have to resign yourself to wasting lots of trees before you write anything good,\u201d said Rowling. \u201cThat\u2019s just how it is.
